Hon Thom was established in 2003 with a total area of 571 ha, including 18 islands with more than 2,076 people. In particular, Hon Thom has the largest area, about 5.7 km2.
Residents focused primarily on five islands (Hon Thom, ROI, Hon May Rut, Hon Doi, Hon Dua) of 18 islands located in the commune. The remaining 13 islands are mostly the desert mountains. Legend has it that the old island here more or less related to the escape and raise the Nguyen lords seeking revenge when wandering to Phu Quoc in the battle with the Tay Son army.
